Given the potential number of attendees for this event we've deicded to invest a bit more into some extra carrier-class equipment for this event. We will now be able to offer up to 256 ports on carrier class equipment as opposed to only 128. Don't worry we've not done this by just doubling the number of ports in existing gear. I'll give you all a breakdown of what's occurred to allow this to happen:
First of all we've managed to acquire a FESX448 instead of a FESX424 as our core switch. We still have the FESX424 as well however (thanks to Aurora Cable). We'll be linking both of these with a 4gbps connection. From the FESX448 there will be a 4gbps trunk connecting to a Riverstone 8600 with 48 10/100 ethernet ports. From this switch will be two other 4gbps connections each going to a Riverstone 8000 with 40 10/100 ports in each. This makes for 128 ports spread over two RS 8000's and an 8600. A similar configuration will be attached to the FESX424 thus doubling the number of ports we're able to offer on carrier-class equipment from 128 to 256.
Pictures of the mess that is my desk will be posted shortly so you can see the collection of network gear we've been collecting.
